Is there dental insurance in India? Is dental treatment covered by insurance? This article will help you know all about dental insurance.

A warm smile and beautiful, healthy teeth bring great confidence in one’s personality. Dental insurance can help you get this confidence through regular dental cleanings, preventive care and protection from unexpected accidental injuries to teeth and gums.

People are purchasing health insurance policies to avoid huge medical expenses that will burn out their pockets. Health insurance covers several critical illnesses in their plan, however, when it comes to dental insurance it is often neglected. Surprising statistics show that 85% to 90% of Indians are suffering from dental issues. Due to poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, and a sugary diet, most Indians suffer from oral cancer, cavities, and periodontal diseases.

Nobody likes going to the dentist. Sometimes the bill can be even more unpleasant than the procedure itself. Dental Filling costs around Rs. 6500, teeth alignment can cost up to Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 1.5 lakh and root canal treatment can cost around INR 3000 – 6000.

What Is Dental Insurance and How Does It Work?

Dental insurance comes under health insurance that covers your necessary dental treatment costs. The health insurance plans offer dental insurance as a part of their plan which helps the policyholders cover the expenses related to the dental procedure, hospitalisation and medicines. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) have announced that dental treatments should also be a part of health insurance even if the procedure does not require hospitalisation. We do not have any stand-alone dental insurance in India so it comes as a part of health insurance.

Dental insurance in India can be availed in three ways;

  1. In case of accidental injury, dental treatment is available as part of the normal health insurance, but the treatment is limited only to restore the normal dental functions and realignment of teeth.
  2. Some insurance companies provide dental insurance as a part of Out Patient Department (OPD). Certain high-end policies have a higher premium amount which provides limited OPD cover of up to Rs. 5000 to Rs. 10,000. This limited OPD cover provides basic dental treatments like filling, tooth extraction, root canal, etc. These policies cover dental as an OPD procedure.
  3. Another case where dental insurance is covered is under group health insurance policies. Group health insurance policy is generally purchased by companies for their employees which do cover dental treatment. Depending on the cover opted by the corporate the health insurance might include dental insurance.
